Dr. José PIÑERA is Founder and President of the International
Center for Pension Reform, an initiative to promote all over the world the privatization
of state-run social security systems.
In the United States, Dr. Piñera is a Senior Distinguished Fellow of the Cato Institute,
co-chairs its Project on Social Security Choice, and is a member of
the Advisory Board of their Trade Policy Center.
He is also Founder and President of "Proyecto Chile 2010", an initiative
that promotes the free society in Chile.
Dr. Piñera was a member of the team of classical liberal economists who engineered
a free market revolution and the return to democratic rule in Chile.
As Minister of Labor and Social Security (1978-1980), he was the architect of Chile's
private pension system and also responsible for the Labor Reform that introduced
flexibility to that market.
As Minister of Mining (1981), he introduced the Mining Reform that established property
rights in this key sector of the Chilean economy.
In 1993, Dr. Piñera was an independent presidential candidate in Chile.
Dr. Piñera holds a Master (1972) and a Ph.D. degree in Economics from Harvard University
(1974), has published numerous articles and is the author of five books.
